Irish Art Exhibit

This month's exhibit in the Nova Straaf gallery aboard the SS Galaxy has been curated by Haydn Shaughnessy whose Kinsale based gallery is Ireland's only gallery devoted to New Media art. The gallery has a growing reputation for supporting artists using novel techniques and controversial concepts and this is all on show here in Nova Straaf Gallery. The month long show brings together artists who combine tradition and innovation as well as blurring the lines of reality, history and modern culture.

Dublin-based Nathaniel Stern is an emerging artist whose chosen techniques revolve around the use of desktop scanners and traditional hand printing. Stern, who is in important Irish collections such as the Contemporary Irish Art Society and Hewlett Packard, uses a standard desktop scanner to capture images as he wanders through nature and streetscapes, images which he then paints electronically or transfers to wood block and other print techniques. Combining tradition and new technology Stern is an artist to watch.

Irish artist Clare Greene's figurative ceramics have won her followers in the collector community around the world but with this new show she returns to her first love painting. The unusual series of paintings is described by Clare as a form of popart a genre Irish artists are now turning to and which collectors are showing increasing interest in against the background of recent auction prices for 1960s American pop art works. In Clare's work thin almost pencil like lines of the female body are set against startling atonal colours to create an altogether novel effect.

EJ Carr is a well established New York fashion photographer who now resides in Ireland. His controversial pictures of the Arthurian legends set Camelot in Ireland and EJ uses local Irish characters to portray members of the Arthurian court. We will also be showing a selection of his stunning abstract landscapes.

Paul La Rocque was educated at the Crawford Art School in Cork and has since gone onto to exhibit globally. His series here is called Icons and in it Paul mixes images of icons from around the world with icons and heroes of Ireland, signalling Ireland's entry and progress in a global economic and cultural order. These images are printed onto aluminium and then painted with acrylic.

Dublin born Clare Keating works with models and make-up artists to make the human face and body the feature of her art. In this selection she recreates six well known works of art by creating the work on the subject of her photography. Her work brilliantly blurs the boundary between reality and illusion but also between art and photography.

Dearbhail's oil on canvas series Home is an exploration of her own loss of the family home in Dublin after it was compulsorily purchased to make way for development. The rectangular lines contain a surprisingly spiritual dimension as the window, the hearth, heat and cold, proximity and distance, all combine in Dearbhail's journey into the heart of the Dublin home.
